THERE are few hardier annuals in financial journalism than articles warning shareholders about getting emotionally involved with their investments.

Take for example the latest survey from Stocktrade, the execution- only division of Brewin Dolphin, claiming that 17 per cent of shareholders (potentially some 2.5 million investors) admitted to having such a strong emotional attachment to their shares that they would be reluctant to sell them even if they were performing poorly.
