John Fowles sprang to fame in 1963 with his first published novel,
The Collector. This was immediately turned into a Hollywood film, as
were his subsequent novels, The Magus and The French Lieutenant's
Woman, the latter was turned into a screen play by Harold Pinter,
starring Meryl Streep in the title role.
Fowles was generally regarded, at that point, as one of the best
and most interesting novelists of his generation. He was unusual,
