John Fowles sprang to fame in 1963 with his first published novel, The Collector. This was immediately turned into a Hollywood film, as were his subsequent novels, The Magus and The French Lieutenant's Woman, the latter was turned into a screen play by Harold Pinter, starring Meryl Streep in the title role.
