SCOTTISH NATIONAL GALLERY OF MODERN ART, EDINBURGH

Junk food, junk films, junk telly, and I might add junk election, junk president and all the consequences that have followed: American culture is so pervasive and affects our lives in so many unwished for and unwelcome ways that it seems perverse of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art to choose this moment to embark on a year-long celebration of American art. Surely we have had enough of America?

But maybe there is another way of looking at it. Whatever the politicians may like to think, ...
