Of all the inventions to shape the modern world, none has been more important than the telephone. However, the man behind the invention, Scot Alexander Graham Bell, has been little honoured for his achievement in the country of his birth. When plans for a BT museum at his Edinburgh birthplace fell through last year, once again the country stood accused of failing to honour its home-grown heroes.

Now, at last, Bell will take the place he deserves in the Royal Museum on Chambers Street, with the opening of a new exhibition on 24 October, one of eight BT Connected Earth galleries across the UK ...
