THE days between Christmas and New Year are a time for old friends, old amusements, old movies, old books; a time for withdrawal, for repose, for welcoming short afternoons, and early evenings by the fireside, a time for another viewing of Casablanca or Meet Me in St Louis or The Gold Rush.

As for reading, the book should be familiar, not too demanding, and preferably set in the past; a book to read in a comfortable chair, even to snooze over, a book that accompanies a good cigar or pipe.
