Early treatment could cut level of child tooth decay

THE appalling level of tooth decay in Scotland's children could be reduced if simple measures are implemented by the time they are 18 months old, according to one of the largest studies of its kind.

Experts believe tooth decay could be reduced by at least a fifth by the time children reach school age if straightforward action - including providing protective varnishes for the teeth and increased parental education - was taken.

Around 55 per cent of children have some sign of tooth decay before they start school, compared with around 40 per cent in England.
