December, 1807, and Alexander Henry answers an urgent hammering on the door of the North West Company fur post he manages on the Pembina River, in what is now North Dakota. Outside, breath smoking in the freezing air, is a diminutive, distraught-looking Orkney man, John Fubbister by name, one of many from the northerly Scottish islands working with the rival Hudson's Bay company. Fubbister is seeking shelter, and complaining of feeling ill.
