They say the further south you travel in the Outer Hebrides, the
more contentious people get. Unkind, no doubt, but certainly the
southerly Hebridean islands of Benbecula, South Uist and Eriskay have
seen their fair share of contention over the past three weeks. A
community land buy-out is in the air but instead of the fanfares and
fireworks associated with the jubilant acquisitions of recent years
in Eigg, Assynt or Knoydart, irate crofters have dug in their heels
over what could be Scotland's biggest such buy-out yet, the 93,000
acres of South Uist Estates.
