FURIOUS Scottish scallop fishermen yesterday claimed that hundreds
of jobs, both at sea and onshore, will be destroyed as a result of
draconian catching curbs being planned by Ross Finnie, the Scottish
fisheries minister.
The fishery, on which 2,000 jobs are dependent, is already reeling
from a recent series of fishing ground closures, caused by the
presence of potentially toxic algal blooms, and restrictions on the
way that scallop catches are handled.
