Hattersley says Brown will be in charge within three years

GORDON Brown will be Labour leader "within three years", the party's former deputy leader Roy Hattersley told the Edinburgh International Book Festival yesterday.

Mr Hattersley, who was Neil Kinnock's No 2 in the 1980s, claimed it was a matter of time before the Chancellor succeeded Tony Blair. The change of leadership would usher in a better era for both Labour and the government, he said.

Mr Hattersley also praised the work of the Scottish Parliament, claiming progressive reforms in education and health had beaten off the challenge from the SNP and were an example to Westminster.
