Fisheries management scheme to be piloted in waters off Shetland

RADICAL proposals to use the waters around Shetland as the testing ground for Europe's first regional fisheries management scheme were unveiled yesterday.

Under the plans, proposed by the Shetland Oceans Alliance (SHOAL), industry representatives, marine scientists and local authority leaders in the islands would take control of the waters within the 12- mile limit, with powers to set catching curbs and impose limits on the type and size of fishing vessels operating within the area.
