Tidal turbine innovation makes waves for renewable energy hopes

THE world's first free-standing tidal turbine system is set to
begin sea trials off the coast of Orkney in a project that could
revolutionise the world's renewable energy industry.
The new turbine - a sea "snail" nicknamed Brian - has been
invented by Professor Ian Bryden of Aberdeen's Robert Gordon
University (RGU), a world authority on tidal energy.
A 30-tonne prototype of the revolutionary device, capable of
generating 150 kilowatts, has been built at the Stonehaven-based
subsea specialists Ross Deeptech Initiatives.
