Launch Delays Darken Future of Space Science Series: Recovering From Challenger Series Number: second of three

If the space agency's Galileo mission had been launched last May as scheduled, it would have arrived at Jupiter in 1988. Now, because of the Challenger disaster a year ago Wednesday, the soonest it will arrive is 1995.

That's a 20-year gap between its conception and its penetration of the Jovian atmosphere. The time span, as one analysis put it, is "more than half a research career."
