IN THESE girth-conscious times, even weight itself has a weight
problem. The kilogram is getting lighter, scientists say, and it is
sowing potential confusion over a range of scientific endeavours.
The kilogram is defined by a platinum-iridium cylinder, cast in
England in 1889 and kept in a sealed vault at a chateau overlooking
the Seine near Paris ever since. But over
the past century, it has become lighter because of microscopic
surface contamination and abrasion. It may only be the difference in
