WHILE every schoolboy could recount the tale of Scott of the Antarctic, one of the most disastrous episodes in polar history remains shrouded in mystery.

In 1845, Sir John Franklin set off with 128 men to discover the North West Passage of the Arctic in his ships Erebus and Terror. They were never to return, after the expedition became stranded in the ice.
