Eight decades on and I think I spy TS Eliot's 'Waste Land'

'April is the cruellest month." TS Eliot began The Waste Land with a line that is now one of the most overquoted in the whole canon, but looking at the headlines on CNN and News 24, he certainly wasn't fooling. The 80th anniversary of a defining 20th-century poem passed a few months ago with very little notice and no very obvious attempt at reassessment. But perhaps it was merely waiting its time, for now once again there are thunderous noises in a dusty place and military soothsayers are shuffling wicked packs of cards. It's been dry in Scotland, but at least we haven't had to worry about ...
