'New clans' rise in Highlands, survey shows

INTEREST in the clan system in the area most associated with its history of blood ties and battles is waning, with a majority believing it has little place in modern-day living.

Research conducted in the Highlands has shown that only 32 per cent of residents believe the traditional clan system is relevant to their way of life today. Less than half the people surveyed said they belonged to what they would term a traditional clan.
