"The Jolly Flatboatmen," an idyllic Missouri River scene by 19th-century painter George Caleb Bingham now on view at the National Gallery of Art, has been sold for $6 million, a record for an American painting.

The 38 1/2-by-48 1/2-inch oil, an icon of American art, has been on loan to the National Gallery since 1953. It was sold privately by the owner, the Pell Family Trust, headed by Sen. Claiborne Pell (D-R.I.), to Richard Manoogian, a Detroit art collector who also recently acquired the Henredon and Drexel furniture manufacturing companies for Masco Corp., of which he is chairman.
