IT'S THE famous question; what did the Romans ever do for us? Well, the roads for a start.

Britain's modern roads are no better than they were under the occupation of the Roman Empire 1,600 years ago, archaeologists have revealed.

The Romans constructed 7,000 miles of major roads in Britain, almost exactly the same length as all the motorways and major trunk roads in the country today, according to an article published in Living History magazine.
