LET us be bold and state unequivocally that Sir William Orpen
(1878-1931) is accepted as Ireland's greatest artist. Not only does
he hold the record for an Irish painting sold at auction - GBP
1,983,500 - but another of his magnificent pictures is by far the
most highly priced work in Christie's Irish Sale, which will take
place in London on 15 May.
That is the day before Sotheby's is due to hold its Irish Sale,
also in London. It is not unusual for Britain's two main auction
firms to hold virtually identical sales within a day or two of each
