Cracks in UN security council widen further

HANS Blix is to deliver his first report on Iraq's suspected weapons programmes to the UN security council on Monday.

His preliminary verdict on how much Saddam Hussein may have kept hidden in terms of biological, chemical and nuclear arms - and the level of his real co-operation - will help settle whether Washington wins backing, in the UN Security Council and the wider world, for military action.

Three months ago, after six weeks of tortuous diplomacy and 11th- hour fudging, the US persuaded 15 members of the UN Security Council to vote unanimously for Resolution 1441.
