Veterans Administration Shuts Heart Surgery Unit in District

The heart surgery unit of the Veterans Administration hospital in
the District, which shut down temporarily Aug. 26 because of a number
of deaths and infections, was formally closed by VA headquarters last
week.
A hospital employe had told The Washington Post that six of the
21 patients undergoing open heart surgery in July and August died.
There were difficulties in the unit for years, including a lack
of surgeons, which prevented the hospital from performing the 150
heart operations a year that the VA said was necessary to ensure
proficiency.
