Tantalized by Tangier;This African Gateway City Blends Ancient and Modern

In the year that separated the true traveler from the mere
tourist, my husband and I showed our mettle. Last May, only four
weeks after the U.S. bombing of Libya, we flew to Tangier, Morocco,
en route to the Spanish island of Ibiza in the Mediterranean.
We really weren't trying to challenge fate. Our travel plans
had been made months earlier when Tangier seemed a rather exotic
destination. Then came Tripoli.
Shrugging off all warnings, we flew nonstop from Miami to Madrid
and made the connection for the hour flight to Tangier. As our plane
