Ashkenazy, Excelling on the Podium

Anybody who follows music is well aware that Vladimir Ashkenazy is a major pianist-in fact, a great one by most measures. But at the Royal Philharmonic's concert last night at the Kennedy Center, the packed house heard Ashkenazy the conductor. He is the orchestra's new music director, starting this month.

The performances had a special distinction that is even rarer than the skill of Ashkenazy the pianist. For, as has been clear from his recordings for some time, Ashkenazy is that rarest of musical animals, an instrumentalist who is as comfortable on a podium with a stick as he is playing ...
