Air pollution levels fall but Scottish cities still suffering major problems

AIR quality in the UK continues to improve, according to new government figures published yesterday.

In urban areas the provisional air quality headline indicator for 2002 shows air pollution was recorded as moderate or higher on 14 days on average per site, compared with 24 days the previous year.

In rural areas the provisional figure for 2002 is 23 days on average per site, compared with 30 days recorded during 2001.

The Westminster air quality minister, Alun Michael, said the long- term trend showed an improvement in air quality but there was still work to be done to tackle the problem.
