Sir George Gardiner, former MP and journalist

Born: 3 March, 1935 Died: 16 November, 2002, in London, aged 67

SIR George Gardiner, the former right-wing Conservative MP, was an old-fashioned Thatcherite who was deeply critical of those who failed to keep Mrs Thatcher's torch blazing after her downfall, and was a no less regular and painful thorn in the side of John Major, when he was prime minister.

Sir George had a long-standing political feud with Mr Major, with whom he disagreed on most main political issues, particularly Europe and taxation.
