Veterans return to El Alamein 60 years on

VETERANS of the battle of El Alamein gathered in Egypt yesterday to mark the 60th anniversary of the action which is credited with changing the course of the Second World War.

The army chose the site of the battle, which began on 23 October, 1942 and ended on 4 November, for a memorial ceremony because it marked a turning point in the Allies' fortunes during the Second World War.

The significance of the battle, in which General Sir Bernard Montgomery defeated the German general Erwin Rommel, was reflected at the time by Sir Winston Churchill, who said: "Before Alamein we never had a victory. ...
