THE Canadian squad to play at Easter Road tomorrow is a multi- ethnic one, and its players ply their trade across two continents. Behind the scenes, though, one influence is dominant: that of the Scots.

The new president of the Canadian Soccer Association, Andy Sharpe, is from Glasgow. His predecessor, Jim Fleming, is from Edinburgh.

What is more, Fleming, who served four two-year terms as CSA president, was also the vice-president of CONCACAF, a role which contributed to his becoming the first Canadian to receive the FIFA Order of Merit.
