CARDINAL Bernard Law, one of the most influential figures in the US Roman Catholic Church and a close ally of Pope John Paul II, yesterday resigned as archbishop of Boston.

The Pope accepted Cardinal Law's offer of resignation after months of growing public outrage over his failure to protect children from sex predators in the ranks of the priesthood.
