Ne Win, dictator who dragged Burma from prosperity to poverty

Born: 14 May, 1911, in Paungbe Died: 5 December, 2002, in Rangoon, aged 91

A PROFESSIONAL soldier and national hero, General Ne Win became the undisputed and brutal master of Burma, dying a lonely man, condemned to house arrest by the very generals he had groomed to succeed him.

Ne Win, whose name means "brilliant as the sun", seized power in a military coup on 2 March, 1962. He quickly set up an authoritarian, one-party, socialist state that isolated itself from the rest of south-east Asia.
