The dust on the suitcase suggested that it had been in the garage
for years. Trevor Kyle, head of valuation at Edinburgh's Lyon &
Turnbull auction house, was nearly finished his work valuing an
estate in East Lothian, when he slid back the catches on the
suitcase. Then he drew out an object that made him catch his breath.
He was holding a painting in oils on copper, a technique used by
artists to paint in exquisite detail on a small scale. It was a
portrait of a young nobleman in 16th-century dress, the work of an
