Coast of Death lives up to its name
|
SINCE the age of ten, Candido Marcos de Santiago has risked his
life fishing for percebes, or goose barnacles, on the Costa da Morte -
the Coast of Death.
It is a terrifying trade: dropping from cliffs on mountain-
climbing ropes and aiming for the rocks lashed by the fiercest waves,
which is where the tastiest barnacles grow.
But now the Costa da Morte is living up to its name.
"It's poison. It burns everything it touches," said Mr Marcos,
pointing to the tar-like coating on the rocks at Finisterre, where
his ancestors have fished for percebes, small crustacea, for
generations.
