IF YOU lie awake at night listening to Lilliburlero, or you can name the characters in the soap West Way, then today is a special birthday. Seventy years ago, at precisely 9:30 am GMT on the morning of 19 December, 1932, the world's first international continuous broadcast news service took to the airwaves. Like the advent of CNN in later television days, this radio station would transform the political world by delivering instantaneous factual information unfettered by local censorship. The newcomer was the BBC Radio World Service (originally known as the Empire Service).
