Warship back for 26m pound repair task after running aground

THE battered warship HMS Nottingham finally returned to the UK yesterday for GBP 26 million worth of repairs after running aground off Australia earlier this year.

The Type-42 destroyer hit rocks and holed its hull from bow to bridge at Lord Howe Island in July.

Yesterday, it was carried stern-first into Portsmouth harbour by the Dutch heavy-lifting ship, MV Swan.

Clearly visible was the 80ft-long gaping hole in its bow, which nearly sank the GBP 115 million ship.

The repair work at Portsmouth naval base is likely to take 18 months.
