The Beauty of Guilin Has Resurfaced in China's Yangshuo
|
For centuries the mountains of Guilin in southeast China have
been considered one of the most beautiful sights in all the Middle
Kingdom. It was to Guilin that artists and poets fled during the
12th-century Southern Sung Dynasty to escape marauding hordes from
the north. The "numberless peaks springing from the flat ground like
jade bamboo shoots," as one ancient described the scenery, inspired
these same artists and poets to make the mountains and mists of
Guilin a Chinese icon.
