Iraqi forces launched a counterattack today against Iranian troops trying to establish a bridgehead several miles inside Iraqi territory near the port city of Basra. Cities on both sides suffered heavy artillery or air attacks in what western military analysts said was the most serious fighting in the Persian Gulf war in nearly a year.
