Iraq Counterattacks After Iran's Thrust;Diplomats Call Fighting Worst in a Year

Iraqi forces launched a counterattack today against Iranian
troops trying to establish a bridgehead several miles inside Iraqi
territory near the port city of Basra. Cities on both sides suffered
heavy artillery or air attacks in what western military analysts said
was the most serious fighting in the Persian Gulf war in nearly a
year.
{Iran claimed to have "crossed the enemy's strongest defensive
lines," and to have begun shelling Iraqi towns, according to Reuter.}
Iraqi war communiques said that two Iraqi divisions attacked Iranian
forces at dawn near a man-made lake only six miles east ...
