IN 1913 the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky completed his
dissonant masterpiece The Rite of Spring, which caused a riot in
Paris when it was first performed and changed the face of Western
music forever.
The following year, as war broke out across Europe, he
transplanted his family to Switzerland, and it was here that he met
and befriended the French-Swiss writer Charles Ferdinand Ramuz. In
1918 the two men collaborated on The Soldier's Tale, a short play
employing both spoken narration and instrumental music. As with The
Rite of Spring, Stravinsky's score was largely based on Russian folk ...
