E-mail search warrants to speed up police work

THE Scottish Executive is planning to introduce a system of e- mail search warrants to improve the efficiency of the criminal justice system, The Scotsman can reveal.

Under current procedures, valuable time can be lost because of the delays inherent in the transfer of a written search warrant from the police to the procurator-fiscal service and back via a sheriff.

The new process, which will use a secure e-mail link, will see warrants being transferred electronically in a matter of seconds, giving police valuable additional time to search premises.
