Strike grips South Africa as unions defy Mbeki

HISTORIC allies of South Africa's ruling African National Congress will today lead a general strike in protest against rising unemployment, high interest rates, soaring food prices and the government's privatisation policies.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and the South African Communist Party (SACP) will bring production to a virtual halt as more than two million workers stay away from work. Anti-ANC marches are scheduled in all major cities and towns.
