South African Foreign Minister Roelof F. (Pik) Botha got a mixed
reception when he visited Tokyo last September.
His Japanese counterpart, Tadashi Kuranari, refused bluntly to
back off from new sanctions then being devised. Japanese businessmen
welcomed him cordially, hosting a luncheon at which he spoke and
conferring with him individually.
That is the story of Japanese-South African relations in
general-cool on the government level, but warm in trade and business.
