SS killer escapes jail for Italian massacre
|
A FORMER SS officer in Italy was freed by a court yesterday
despite a sentence of seven years in prison for the massacre of
prisoners during the Second World War.
The term would probably have meant a life sentence for Friedrich
Engel, a former major who is now 93. However, the judge said that
because of his age and the erratic testimony of witnesses, he could
go free.
Engel was convicted of ordering the reprisal killing of 59 Italian
prisoners from Genoa's Marassi jail. However, he said he had been
only obeying orders. He cited a command from Hitler to "retaliate
massively" against partisan ...
