Forget peas. Eva Grooms can get children to eat turnips, lima beans and eggplant.

Grooms, who is the cook at the Bel Pre Day Care Learning Center in Silver Spring, has been building little bodies for the past 33 years. And what she has been fueling them with are homey meals, made from scratch, with an emphasis on variety and good nutrition.

At a time when day care feeding often consists of brown bag lunches, packaged foods provided by local school lunch programs or simple snacks, Grooms is an anomaly.
