Vaccinations key to avoiding repeat of 500m pound foot-and-mouth outbreak

LAST year's foot-and-mouth epidemic cost Scotland's rural economy
more than GBP 480 million - but the emotional toll on farmers and the
public of mass animal slaughter was even more significant, a report
published yesterday claimed.
The study, by the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE), concluded that
vaccination must be used to fight the spread of disease in any future
outbreak, alongside the slaughter of confirmed infected animals. The
RSE's committee of inquiry, under Professor Ian Cunningham, noted
that almost three-quarters of the 735,000 cattle and sheep
slaughtered on 1644 farms in ...
