Pennsylvania Soil Yields Relics of 1st Land Animals

Prehistoric animals first left the sea, where life began, and invaded the land a few tens of millions of years earlier than has been supposed, two geologists have concluded after finding the remains of their burrows in dryland soils preserved in central Pennsylvania from more than 430 million years ago.

Until now, the earliest evidence of land animals had indicated that arthropods resembling scorpions and millipedes had evolved to live on land during the Silurian period, which began about 430 million years ago.
