WITH her QC's earnings and army of domestic help, Cherie Blair is not everyone's idea of working-class. One day with the Queen of Jordan, another chairing Downing Street seminars - that's not how Elsie Tanner used to spend her days.

But for Joe Ashton, a former Labour MP, the Prime Minister's wife qualifies as working-class because of her relationship with her mother. In his eyes, the fact that Gale Booth goes on holiday with the Blairs and looks after the children gives her daughter a credible claim.

Mr Ashton is entitled to his view. It might seem churlish to point out that mothers helping ...
