"ELEONORA DUSE," a one-woman show at New Playwrights' Theater, intends to offer an impressionistic tour of the nomadic life of the great actress. Unfortunately, playwright/performer Dorothea Hammond's piece plays more like an encyclopedia bio outline read aloud with an erratic Italian accent.

The performer called by some "the first modern actress," Duse (DOO-say) made her name internationally famous in plays by Dumas, Ibsen and D'Annunzio. Hammond's play begins on the night of Duse's death - in Pittsburgh, of all places - as the 66-year-old actress coughs and complains of a chill. ...
