Verbrugghe powers in amid new doping row

BELGIAN cyclist Rik Verbrugghe won the seventh stage of the Giro d'Italia in Lido di Camaiore yesterday, as yet another doping scandal threatened to overshadow the race.

Verbrugghe, of the Lotto Adecco team, finished in the Tuscan seaside resort nearly a minute ahead of Germany's Raphael Schweda, who outsprinted a small group of riders.

Jens Heppner, of Team Telekom, retained the overall leader's pink jersey as he finished in the main group, 1min 46sec behind the winner.

Heppner snatched the pink jersey from Italy's Stefano Garzelli, after Saturday's second stage in Belgium.
