Queen of the north

The soft pungency of box hedge warmed by spring sunshine wafts in
the open door of Jane Stevenson's workroom. Outside is the garden;
beyond that, on the buff fields of Buchan, tractors are raising dust
and peewits.
Our thoughts, however, are drifting about 17th-century Holland,
London, Barbados, the settings for Stevenson's enthusiastically
greeted historical novel, Astraea, and its newly published sequel,
The Pretender.
"I think the second half of the 17th century was a horrible time,"
says Stevenson, who lectures in comparative literature at Aberdeen
University, some 35 miles to the south. ...
