ARGUABLY Ireland's greatest artist, Sir William Orpen (1878- 1931), is famous for his painting The Signing of the Peace Treaty at Versailles which ended the First World War, and which Orpen recorded as the official painter - it is in the Imperial War Museum in London - but there was a side of his life which official biographies discreetly overlook.

For many years, Orpen had a passionate love affair with Evelyn St George, one of the best known society ladies in Ireland in the early years of the 20th century. They had been lovers for about five years before their relationship became public ...
