Children must see farming first-hand

THE results were not encouraging - almost two-thirds of the Scottish nine-and 10-year-olds taking part in a survey thought that cotton comes from sheep and more than half thought that oranges are grown in Scotland.

More than 40 per cent thought that peaches are grown here; 15 per cent thought the same about bananas, while 40 per cent weren't sure about olives. But 80 per cent were certain about potatoes.

No-one needs to look far beyond their nearest supermarket for an explanation for the answers given by 126 pupils from 50 city primary schools in a survey conducted by the Royal Highland ...
